ThermoStick is primarily aimed automatic transmissions, but will work in engines as well. Why monitor the temperature? Automatic transmissions often have plastic based parts in the valve body that help to determine how the transmission shifts. These plastic parts have trouble surviving high termperatures for extended lengths of time.
Transmission running temperatures in the range of 220°f - 250°f can spell trouble, and cause the transmission to malfunction. Towing trailers will increase the running termperature of your automatic transmission. You can avoid costly transmission repair, if you monitor the temperature and make sure it stays around 175° f. ATF transmission lubricant also degrades with high temperatures. It oxidizes, turns brown, and has reduced lubrication qualities. This wears out your trasmission early. The numerous metal fragments that begin to separate from the gear sets get pumped throughout the transmission and further increase the wear.
According to the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association, 90% of ALL transmission failures are caused by overheating. And most of these can be blamed on worn out fluid that should have been replaced. Knowing the transmission oil temperature can save you a lot of trouble over time.
